DAS Academy’s will be conducting the inaugural Uniting Ideas in Teaching Excellence (UnITE) Specific Learning Differences (SpLD) 2015 Conference on Friday, 26 June 2015. This is their first conference which focuses on the various specific learning difficulties. There will be experts from DAS speaking at the two break out sessions which include topics on ‘Understanding how assessment results can support intervention and learning’, ‘The importance of early intervention of literacy difficulties at preschool: practical strategies that support teaching and learning’ and ‘Learning through technology: why we need to believe it for our learners’ will be shared at the conference.
Mr Sim Gim Guan, CEO, National Council of Social Services (NCSS) will address the audience at the event as the guest-of-honour. Featuring a line-up of SpLD experts, the conference will present insightful topics and issues faced by practitioners and learners in the field and best practices from local perspectives. The speakers of the three plenary sessions are Associate Professor Noel Chia Kok Hwee from the National Institute of Education who will examine several types of learning disabilities, the learning and behavioural challenges that manifest from each of the learning disabilities and ways to provide targeted intervention to address these challenges; June Siew, Head of DAS Academy, who will discuss the alternate views of fixing dyslexia and the blind spots associated with these views; and Mel Cheang, author and locum Psychologist at Raffles Hospital who will share about self-esteem development in the other two plenary sessions.
This will be the first-of-its-kind conference to explore practical issues and gather ideas focusing on support, intervention and assessment for children with SpLD.
UnITE SpLD is the first conference in Singapore targeted at fostering teaching excellence and facilitating professional development amongst specialists in the field of SpLD, including psychologists, educational therapists and educators, and parents and caregivers of children with special learning needs.
It is estimated that about one out of every 10 Singaporeans has special educational needs, including dyslexia, dyspraxia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and Asperger’s syndrome. With a growing awareness and dedication to children with special educational needs, the demand for professionals in the field has increased.
By bringing together the community concerned with SpLD, UnITE SpLD aims to raise the standards of the field through expert sharing on behavioural, literacy and social emotional support; intervention and assessment for children with SpLD and encourage greater professional development.
