Award-Winning Monkey Goes West Returns by Popular Demand and Review

Many of us are familiar with the story, Journey to the West especially this year is the Year of the Monkey and most of us have watched the box-office hit Chinese movie, The Monkey King 2 based on the classic novel Journey to the West  starring Gong Li, Aaron Kwok and Feng Shao Feng during the Lunar New Year in February.

Our Parenting World team is excited to know that W!ld Rice has brought back its sellout and award winning Monkey Goes West, a good way to end off this year of the Monkey! The story is based on the popular Chinese fantasy classic, Journey to the West with a local twist.

The show has multiple beautiful and colourful sets that are elaborately designed and switched smoothly to reflect the different scene as we follow the cast on their  journey to the West and to a typical Singaporean home where Ah Tang aka Tang Sanzhang played by Joshua Lim, he is living with his relatives after his mother passed away. At his relatives’ home, he felt inferior to his high achiever cousin who has won many trophies.

Ah Tang thinking that his relatives do not love him, escaped and travelled to Haw Par Villa to get some inspiration for his homework. With a twist of fate, he was mistaken as Tang Sanzhang and encountered Monkey King aka Sun Wu Kong played by Sugie Phua. Audience will join them on a thrilling and bizarre journey to Jurong West, along the way, they are joined by Pigsy played by Frances Lee and Sandy played by Siti Khalijah Zainal.

The show has cleverly weaved in local context and recent news with reference to the US Presidential election with the Monkey King expressing his own political views. Expect lots of interaction with the cast as they will bounce off questions to the audience. There is never a dull moment in the show, audience are treated to catchy songs, lively dancing and funny jokes throughout. Many audience including us were heard laughing all through the show.

Chua En Lai certainly steals the show, he has multiple roles as Auntie Fanny and Princess Iron Fan. Many of us are familiar with him especially with his portrayal of various funny and lovable characters like B.B.See in The Noose. At this play, he has once again tickle our funny bones in his impersonation of women roles. En Lai is a hit with the audience and in his role, he has to wear really high heels and it is amazing to see him being able to walk so well and his character has the habit of mispronouncing words much to our amusement.

The cast is brilliant in their respective roles and we are able to relate to them being in the famous characters from Journey to the West. Monkey Goes West is directed by Sebastian Tan well known as Broadway Beng expect lots of “beng jokes” throughout the play.

Bringing the Year of the Monkey to a happy climax, W!LD RICE’s award-winning Monkey Goes West will be returning for a strictly limited season to the Drama Centre Theatre for the holidays.

Monkey Goes West completely sold out its first run in 2014, playing to an audience of more than 15,000 at the newly refurbished Victoria Theatre. It dominated the 2015 Straits Times Life! Theatre Awards with seven nominations – more than any other production that year. It eventually took home the awards for Production of the Year, Production of the Year (Reader’s Choice) and Best Costume Design (Tube Gallery).

“The W!LD RICE pantomime is a unique annual tradition for family audiences in Singapore, and Monkey Goes West set a new benchmark in terms of the artistic excellence that we always strive for,” says Ivan Heng, Artistic Director of W!LD RICE. “In the Year of the Monkey, we are thrilled that audiences, both loyal and new, will have the opportunity to experience this incredible show for themselves!”

With an affectionate, cheeky script by W!LD RICE Resident Playwright Alfian Sa’at, music by acclaimed composer Elaine Chan and direction by Broadway Beng Sebastian Tan, Monkey Goes West is the first W!LD RICE pantomime to take inspiration from the East, relocating beloved Chinese literary classic Journey To The West to modern-day Singapore.

Tan, who earned a Straits Times Life! Theatre Award nomination for Best Director for his work, will return to direct the production, which he describes as a “dream come true”.

Monkey Goes West turned out to be this award-winning show that audiences loved and couldn’t get enough of, which is really why we are bringing it back so soon,” Tan explains with pride.

Young talents from Martial House – Singapore’s leading wushu academy – will be showing off their impressive martial arts skills on stage. The academy will also work closely with the children of W!LD RICE’s FIRST STAGE! programme, aged 5 to 12, in preparation for their stage debuts.
