Step back millions of years and journey through Earth’s most awe-inspiring history at DINOSAURS | EXTINCTIONS | US at the Annexe, Science Centre Singapore. This world-class exhibition combines two extraordinary showcases, Dinosaurs of Patagonia and Six Extinctions to tell the epic story of life, loss, and survival on our planet.

A Celebration of Science and Discovery

Each fossil in Dinosaurs of Patagonia, featured within DINOSAURS | EXTINCTIONS | US, tells a story of discovery and perseverance, inviting visitors to explore how science connects us to our past and to the planet we share. Presented internationally by Akrom Pty Ltd (Australia), Dinosaurs of Patagonia celebrates decades of pioneering research and scientific leadership by the Museo Paleontológico Egidio Feruglio (MEF), sharing the legacy of Argentine palaeontology with audiences around the world.

As part of the exhibition, Six Extinctions guides visitors through Earth’s most dramatic moments of change, events that wiped out most life yet ultimately shaped the planet we know today. By examining the causes and consequences of the five great mass extinctions, as well as humanity’s role in the ongoing sixth, the exhibition connects the past to the present, showing that extinction is both a story of loss and renewal. With a large collection of rare fossils, models, dinosaur skeletons, and science-based storytelling, visitors are encouraged to reflect on humanity’s impact and the power we have to influence what survives next.

Interview with Maximiliano Iberlucea, Paleotechnician & Head of Exhibition Workshop – Museo Paleontológico Egidio Feruglio (MEF), Trelew, Argentina.

Our team spoke to Maximiliano Iberlucea, Paleotechnician and Head of Exhibition Workshop at Museo Paleontológico Egidio Feruglio (MEF) in Trelew, Argentina, to learn more about what goes on behind the scenes. He shared fascinating insights into the meticulous work involved in preparing fossils for research and exhibition, his journey from a curious teenager volunteering in paleontology to becoming a professional in the field, and his advice for young dinosaur enthusiasts dreaming of following in his footsteps.

1) Most people know about palaeontologists, but not paleotechnicians. How would you explain the difference, and why is your role so important?

Maximiliano Iberlucea: Paleontologists design and lead the research projects. They go out into the field and conduct the scientific studies on the fossils that are collected. As paleotechnicians, we assist researchers during fieldwork and carry out the manual cleaning and preparation processes that allow fossils to be studied, stored in collections, and exhibited,  as is happening here in Singapore.

2) What’s one behind-the-scenes aspect of your work that visitors would be surprised to learn about?

Maximiliano Iberlucea: I find the whole process fascinating, the discovery, the cleaning of the material, the assembly of the skeleton. It brings together so many disciplines that it becomes a truly dynamic and engaging field.

3) You started as a volunteer in your teenage years. What first sparked your fascination with fossils? Looking back at your career, was there a moment when you realised this passion could become a job?

Maximiliano Iberlucea: What child doesn’t love dinosaurs? Being part of the discovery of one is extraordinary. At that age, it sparks curiosity, imagination, and a love of learning,  things that stay with us throughout life. There’s nothing better than turning what you’re passionate about into your profession.

4) What skills or qualities do you think are most important to succeed as a paleotechnician?

Maximiliano Iberlucea: It takes manual skill, the ability to work collaboratively, and a commitment to developing expertise in the area where you have the greatest potential.

5) What advice would you give to a young dinosaur enthusiast who dreams of following in your footsteps? How can parents support their children if they are interested in pursuing a career in this field?

Maximiliano Iberlucea: Get involved in every activity you can that’s related to paleontology. Visit museums and stay curious.

DINOSAURS | EXTINCTIONS | US is more than just an exhibition, it’s a celebration of discovery, curiosity, and humanity’s shared responsibility for our planet’s future. Through the remarkable work of experts like Maximiliano Iberlucea and the groundbreaking research of Museo Paleontológico Egidio Feruglio, visitors in Singapore will have the rare opportunity to witness the wonders of prehistoric life and reflect on what comes next in the story of Earth.
