Spread the love

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic musical, The Phantom of the Opera, is set to captivate audiences in Singapore once again. Presented by Base Entertainment Asia in association with The Really Useful Group and Crossroads Live, this strictly limited-season production is running from May 9 to June 22, 2025, at the Sands Theatre, Marina Bay Sands.

A Timeless Tale of Love and Mystery

Based on Gaston Leroux’s 1910 novel Le Fantôme de L’Opéra, the musical tells the haunting story of a mysterious, disfigured musical genius known as the Phantom who lives beneath the Paris Opera House. Obsessed with the young soprano Christine Daae, he nurtures her extraordinary talents while unleashing a reign of terror on those around them. The story explores themes of love, jealousy, and tragedy that remain compelling more than a century after its inception.

A World-Class Cast and Production

The Singapore production stars Ben Forster as the Phantom and Grace Roberts as Christine Daae, supported by a cast of 37 international performers from countries such as the United Kingdom, United States of America, South Africa, and Australia. Directed by Phantom Associate Director Rainer Fried, with musical supervision by Kristen Blodgette and choreography by Denny Berry, this production preserves the grandeur and emotional depth that have made Phantom one of the world’s most celebrated musicals.

Visual and Musical Spectacle

Renowned for its lavish set designs, intricate costumes, and unforgettable musical numbers such as “The Music of the Night” and “All I Ask of You,” the production immerses audiences in the opulence and mystery of the Paris Opera House. The iconic chandelier scene, the eerie boat ride through the Phantom’s lair, and the live orchestra’s powerful score combine to create a truly unforgettable theatrical experience.

From the moment we stepped into the Sands Theatre, we were swept up in theatrical magic. Jonathan Roxmouth’s portrayal of the Phantom was both chilling and deeply emotional, a haunting presence whose vocals moved effortlessly between menace and vulnerability. Grace Roberts’ Christine was enchanting, her voice soaring beautifully and her performance capturing Christine’s innocence and inner conflict with touching subtlety.

The chemistry between the leads felt natural and powerful, enhancing the emotional weight of their story. Visually, the show was breathtaking without overwhelming; the seamless transitions and immersive lighting effects, especially during the boat scene, felt cinematic yet intimate.

Hearing Andrew Lloyd Webber’s timeless score performed live, backed by an outstanding orchestra, was a spine-tingling experience. The audience around us was visibly captivated, some moved to tears, a testament to the production’s lasting emotional impact.

What struck us most was the timelessness of the story, a tragic tale of love, obsession, and beauty that remains relevant and moving today. This production delivers all that and more, reaffirming The Phantom of the Opera as one of musical theatre’s greatest masterpieces.
