Interview with Fadli Kamsani of Mediacorp RIA 897

1) How do you ensure quality time with your three children despite a fast-paced media career?
Fadli Kamsani: Whenever I have time with them, I make sure to set work aside completely. On weekdays, the time I spend with them is usually at the start of the day when I send them to school, so I only start work after they are in school. On weekends, if I do not have any shoots or gigs, I make it a point to bring them out, even if it is only for an hour.
2) Can you describe your approach to being a “hands-on” father?
Fadli Kamsani: To me, being a “hands-on” father means being present and actively sharing the responsibilities with my wife. Beyond being the primary provider, I am also involved in getting the children ready and making sure the household chores are kept in check. If needed, I would never hesitate to step into the kitchen to help my wife.
3) What are the most rewarding and challenging aspects of balancing work and family life?
Fadli Kamsani: The most rewarding part is definitely coming home to my little angels greeting me at the door. No matter how tough my day at work has been, their smiles are what keep me going. The most challenging part, though, is explaining to them why Daddy has to work so hard. Hahaha. It is a sacrifice that many people do not always see, but for me, that has been the hardest part.
4) How do you adjust your parenting style as your children grow and enter new stages of life?
Fadli Kamsani: Go with the flow and do not be too rigid. Being open and adaptable when addressing certain situations can be very helpful. Most importantly, communication is key. One thing my wife and I have agreed on is to always stay on the same wavelength, because that is the best way for us to understand each other and manage expectations.
5) Are there moments when work conflicts with family, and how do you manage those situations?
Fadli Kamsani: Always. But in these situations, having a spouse who understands what you do and why you do it is key. Her support is a major factor in helping me perform at my best. I also make it a point to check in on my wife regularly, both physically and emotionally, to make sure she is doing well, because it can get overwhelming at times.
6) How do you make time for your children and stay present, even during busy work periods?
Fadli Kamsani: Time management and setting priorities are key. Whenever I get busy, any free time I have is dedicated solely to my wife and kids. Even if it is only for a couple of hours, I make sure they get the best version of me. During that time, I put everything else aside and ensure that my attention for them is always at a hundred percent and no less than that.
7) How do you maintain strong family bonds through the different stages of parenthood?
Fadli Kamsani: Communication is everything. Staying in constant communication with my wife is very important to me. Sometimes, all it takes is a simple text message or a short call to maintain that strong bond. The time we spend together before and after work also matters a lot.
8) What advice would you give to fathers striving to stay actively involved in their children’s lives?
Fadli Kamsani: I would definitely say to take care of your well-being first. If you have not been eating right, start now. If you have not been working out, start now. Your family deserves the best version of you, nothing less. If you are not at your best, it becomes much harder to care for your family the way you want to.
So begin by looking after your own well-being, and the rest will slowly fall into place. You will become a more present dad — one who shows up consistently. You’ve got this, kings!
