Mosquito bites are a common part of daily life in Singapore, especially for families who enjoy spending time outdoors. Whether it is a weekend at the park, a visit to the zoo, or an evening stroll, insect bites can quickly turn an enjoyable outing into an uncomfortable experience.

Recognising this challenge, Bye Bye Bite has officially launched in Singapore, introducing a reusable, drug-free insect bite relief device designed to help families manage the effects of insect bites and stings. Developed in Denmark and sold globally, the device uses controlled suction technology as an alternative approach to traditional creams, sprays and gels.

The idea to bring Bye Bye Bite to Singapore began from a personal experience. Like many parents, Jonathan Knapp and his family spend a great deal of time outdoors and were looking for a practical way to deal with mosquito bites without relying solely on chemical-based products. After discovering the Danish invention through friends in Copenhagen and experiencing its benefits firsthand, they were surprised that the product remained relatively unknown in Singapore despite its global reach.

Today, Bye Bye Bite aims to provide families with a simple, reusable solution that fits easily into everyday life, while also supporting greater awareness of mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue.

To learn more about the inspiration behind Bye Bye Bite, the challenges families face when dealing with mosquito bites, and the company’s vision for Singapore, we spoke with Managing Director, Jonathan Knapp. In this interview, Jonathan shares how a personal family experience led to the launch of Bye Bye Bite in Singapore, explains how the device works, and discusses the importance of helping families enjoy the outdoors while remaining bite-aware.

Interview with Managing Director, Jonathan Knapp

1. Can you tell us the story behind Bye Bye Bite and what inspired you to bring it to Singapore?

Jonathan Knapp: Like many families in Singapore, we spend a lot of time outdoors.

We live close to Sembawang Park, so weekends often involve heading there with the children, exploring local playgrounds or simply enjoying time outside together.

And like many parents here, mosquito bites quickly became part of everyday family life.

At the time, our interest was entirely personal. As a family living in Asia, we had been looking for a way to manage bites without constantly reaching for sprays, creams or chemicals.

Six months ago, friends from Copenhagen introduced us to a simple Danish invention designed to relieve the effects of insect bites and stings. Created by a Danish husband-and-wife team, the concept was refreshingly straightforward: using just air to help remove the irritants left beneath the skin after a bite or sting.

We tried it ourselves and were amazed at how well it worked!

What surprised us even more was that despite more than 30 million units having been sold globally, very few people in Singapore had heard of it. We certainly hadn’t.

But the more we learned, the more we realised this wasn’t really about itch relief alone.

It was about helping families spend more time outdoors with confidence, while also encouraging greater awareness of mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue.

That was the moment Bye Bye Bite began.

2. As parents yourselves, what challenges did you face when dealing with mosquito bites and insect stings at home?

Jonathan Knapp: Anyone with young children knows that a mosquito bite can quickly become a much bigger issue than it seems.

A perfect day out can be disrupted in an instant when one of the kids starts crying, scratching or complaining that a bite is itchy.

Children naturally scratch—especially in the evening or at bedtime—which can lead to broken skin, discomfort and restless nights for the whole family.

The reality is that bites happen. Even when you’re using repellents and taking sensible precautions, it’s impossible to avoid every mosquito.

We wanted something simple that could help after a bite occurs—something that provides quick relief, fits easily into a backpack or stroller, and doesn’t involve adding yet another cream or product to our family routine.

For us, it’s about helping families get back to enjoying the moment.

3. Why did you feel there was a need for an alternative to traditional creams, sprays and other bite relief products?

Jonathan Knapp: Preventing bites will always be the first line of defence, especially in tropical countries like Singapore where dengue remains a concern.

But prevention isn’t always perfect. Children still get bitten.

We felt there was room for a practical, drug-free option that families could use after a bite occurs. Bye Bye Bite doesn’t rely on chemicals or creams and can be reused again and again as it doesn’t need refills.

For many parents, simplicity matters.

4. How does Bye Bye Bite work, and what makes it different from conventional bite treatments?

Jonathan Knapp: Bye Bye Bite uses gentle, precisely controlled suction to help remove some of the irritants left beneath the skin following an insect bite or sting.

Instead of covering the affected area with creams or gels, the device works mechanically.

While the concept is simple, there is significant science and engineering behind the design. The Danish-manufactured device has been carefully developed to deliver a consistent and precise level of suction that is both effective and easy to use.

Bye Bye Bite is an HSA-notified Class A medical device in Singapore and is manufactured to stringent quality standards.

It’s compact, reusable and easy to clean—simply rinse with water—making it a practical addition to a school bag, backpack, travel kit or family first-aid kit.

Many parents appreciate having a simple, drug-free option that everyone can keep close at hand—whether they’re at school, attending CCA, travelling or simply enjoying time outdoors.

5. Why do you think mosquito bites are often dismissed as a minor inconvenience?

Jonathan Knapp: For most people, a mosquito bite is simply an itchy nuisance.

However, in many parts of the world – including Singapore – mosquitoes can carry serious diseases such as dengue.

We believe it’s important to strike a balance: we don’t want families to become fearful of the outdoors, but we do want people to be more aware of the importance of prevention, education and early action.

6. With dengue continuing to be a concern across Asia, what role can families play in prevention and awareness?

Jonathan Knapp: Families play a critical role.

Simple habits – removing stagnant water, using appropriate repellents, wearing suitable clothing and understanding local health guidance – can make a real difference.

Just as importantly, parents can help children develop awareness from an early age without creating anxiety around outdoor play.

Our view is simple: enjoy the outdoors, but be bite-aware.

7. What advice would you give parents who want to encourage their children to enjoy outdoor activities while staying bite-aware?

Jonathan Knapp: Children should absolutely be encouraged to explore, play and spend time outdoors.

Preparation is key.

Keep a small outdoor essentials kit with you that includes water, sunscreen, insect repellent that works for your family, and bite relief tools.

As parents, we tend to favour simple, drug-free solutions wherever possible, which is one of the reasons Bye Bye Bite resonated with us.

A little planning gives parents confidence and helps ensure that a mosquito bite doesn’t derail an otherwise great day out.

8. What are some of your favourite family outdoor spots in Singapore?

Jonathan Knapp: Other than the ones near our place, we also love places like Coney Island Park, the Singapore Zoo and Night Safari.

Singapore does an incredible job of making nature accessible to families.

Whether it’s a playground, park connector or nature reserve, getting outdoors is a hugely important part of family life for us.

9. Bye Bye Bite is designed to be reusable and drug-free. How important are those features to today’s parents?

Jonathan Knapp: Today’s parents are increasingly looking for products that are simple, practical and designed to fit seamlessly into busy family life.

They want solutions that can be used repeatedly, shared across the family and easily carried wherever the day takes them—whether that’s school, after-school activities, holidays or weekends at the park.

We’ve also noticed growing interest in products that help families reduce waste and avoid unnecessary single-use items.

That’s where a reusable, drug-free option like Bye Bye Bite really resonates.

It’s compact, easy to clean and designed to be used again and again, which means parents can simply keep one in a backpack, travel kit or family first-aid kit and know it’s always there when they need it.

For many families, convenience and simplicity are every bit as important as effectiveness.

10. What has the response from Singapore families been like so far?

Jonathan Knapp: Everyone we’ve shown the device to – from fellow parents and friends to healthcare professionals and retail partners – has been fascinated by how simple the concept is.

The most common reaction is usually, “Why haven’t I seen this before?” That was exactly our reaction when we first discovered it ourselves.

People immediately understand the problem it solves because almost every family has experienced a day out being interrupted by an itchy bite or sting.

Parents particularly appreciate that it’s reusable, drug-free and compact enough to clip onto a school bag, backpack or travel kit.

Each device also comes with a handy carry-clip, making it easy to keep close at hand wherever the family goes.

We’re excited to introduce Bye Bye Bite to more families across Singapore and hear their experiences once they start using it themselves.

11. What are your hopes for Bye Bye Bite over the next few years?

Jonathan Knapp: Our goal is straightforward: to help more families enjoy the outdoors with greater confidence.

We also hope to play a small role in broader conversations around mosquito awareness and vector-borne diseases.

Bye Bye Bite isn’t a substitute for prevention measures, but we believe it can be a useful addition to the family toolkit.

Sometimes the simplest ideas can make a meaningful difference.
