Singapore is celebrating its Golden Jubilee, SG50 this year and it is a good opportunity to know and understand more about Singapore’s heritage.

“Looking at Heritage Buildings” is a picture book produced by John Koh with the support of the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) which introduces readers especially the younger generations to Singapore’s built heritage in a colourful and light-hearted way.

Here’s a peek inside the book, it gives a bird’s eye view of 75 buildings that are marked for conversation through its guide, Billie, an Oriental Pied Hornbill.

Through Billie, we can see 75 buildings organised in five different groups according to their location in the book. The five groups are:

1) Alexandra

2) Queenstown

3) Along the River

4) Serangoon

5) Seletar and Moulmein

Even though Singapore is a modern city filled with new buildings and skyscrapers. There are actually old buildings in Singapore that are beautiful and rich in history. These buildings formed part of our heritage and are conserved by Urban Redevelopment Authority so that these buildings will still be around for our younger generations and into the future.

The book gives us a better understanding of the 75 heritage buildings that are being conserved with colourful photographs followed by Billie’s nugget of information that tells us more about the history and highlights of the building’s unique architectural features. You can even use the book as a guide to take the opportunity to embark on a walking trail with your family and friends to look and admire the heritage buildings featured in the book.

The buildings include warehouses along the Singapore River, Istana, Queenstown Public Library, Commonwealth Avenue Wet Market, Royal Air Force air base at Seletar and many more.
