For many parents, finding a restaurant that works for the whole family can be a challenge, one that brings together different tastes, generations and occasions. For families in Singapore, Din Tai Fung has long been a familiar choice, offering a dining experience where grandparents, parents and children can come together over shared dishes.

From childhood meals and family celebrations to weekend gatherings and everyday dining, Din Tai Fung has grown alongside generations of Singapore families. While its signature Steamed Pork Xiao Long Bao remains a much-loved favourite, the brand’s extensive menu means everyone can find their own go-to dish, making it a dependable choice for different family occasions.

At the heart of Din Tai Fung’s brand DNA is a commitment to consistency, precision and the pursuit of perfection. Consistency means delivering the same quality and care in every dish, every service moment and every guest experience, guided by carefully selected ingredients and established preparation standards.

Precision can be seen in the careful preparation of each dish, most visibly in the signature 18 folds of every Xiao Long Bao, while the pursuit of perfection reflects the brand’s continuous drive to refine every step, honour every detail and make each dining experience better than the last.

With the opening of its new restaurant at ION Orchard, Din Tai Fung continues this journey, preserving the familiar flavours families know while continuing to evolve with new generations of diners.

From an Oil Shop to an Icon of Craftsmanship

Din Tai Fung’s story began in 1958, when Mr Yang Bing-Yi opened a humble shop selling cooking oil in Taipei.

As demand for cooking oil declined in the early 1970s, he began making Xiao Long Bao out of half his shop. This side venture would go on to define the brand known around the world today.

With roots stretching back more than 60 years, the brand continues to be guided by the same founding spirit of refining every detail and pursuing perfection.

Its commitment to consistency, precision and craftsmanship is reflected in the careful preparation of its dishes and the attention given to every detail, from the kitchen to the table.

A New ION Orchard Restaurant Inspired by Its Beginnings

The new Din Tai Fung restaurant at ION Orchard marks another chapter for the brand while paying homage to its origins.

The restaurant takes design inspiration from Din Tai Fung Taiwan’s first store at Xinyi Road, Taipei. Rather than following the template of its more recent openings, Din Tai Fung chose to build its newest restaurant in the image of its very first, reviving the spirit of the original oil shop through design, storytelling and detail.

Spanning over 3,000 square feet with 100 seats, the new restaurant offers an intimate setting and a cosy respite for shoppers after a busy day at ION Orchard.

A dedicated heritage wall traces the brand’s milestones from its founding as an oil shop to its present-day footprint. Beyond that, the wall stands as a tribute to Din Tai Fung’s ongoing commitment to continuous refinement and the pursuit of perfection.

The restaurant also features a replicated version of Din Tai Fung’s original signboard. The sign reads “Din Tai Fung Oil Retail”, and ION Orchard marks the first time this piece has been recreated and displayed at any Din Tai Fung restaurant in Singapore.

The Spirit of Din Tai Fung, On Screen

The opening also marks the debut of Din Tai Fung Singapore’s first local brand film since the brand launched in Singapore.

The 60-second film centres on the brand’s DNA of precision, operational excellence and the pursuit of perfection. It captures the values that define every Din Tai Fung experience, including thoughtful craft, warm service and the belief that every detail matters.

Through the film, Din Tai Fung reaffirms its original intent while continuing to bring people together over meaningful dining moments.

Two Exclusive Dishes at ION Orchard

To mark the occasion, Din Tai Fung introduces two dishes available only at its ION Orchard restaurant, each reinterpreting a beloved Taiwanese food staple through the brand’s own lens of precision.

Noodles with Shrimp & Pork Wantons in Peanut Sesame Sauce 麻酱虾肉馄饨面 — $14.80

Inspired by the comfort of everyday Taiwanese home cooking, this ION Orchard exclusive combines springy noodles with hand-wrapped shrimp and pork wantons and a fragrant peanut sesame sauce.

The dish creates a hearty and comforting noodle experience, offering a take on a common daily staple that has long shaped Taiwan’s food culture.

Shrimp & Pork Wantons in Spicy Sauce 香辣虾肉馄饨  — $12.80

Wantons are a familiar favourite in everyday Chinese dining, loved for their delicate wrapper and comforting filling.

At Din Tai Fung ION Orchard, shrimp and pork wantons are presented with a bolder flavour expression, paired with a vibrant spicy sauce that brings warmth, depth and an appetite-opening kick to the dish.

Both dishes join Din Tai Fung’s globally celebrated menu of classics, including its signature Steamed Pork Xiao Long Bao featuring the signature 18 folds, alongside the brand’s full suite of beloved staples.

A Limited-Edition Bao Zai Keepsake

Adding a collectible element to the ION Orchard opening, diners can receive a complimentary limited-edition Bao Zai pouch with a minimum spend of $80 before GST and service charge, available while stocks last.

Continuing to Evolve While Staying Rooted in Its Heritage

The opening of Din Tai Fung ION Orchard represents both a tribute to the brand’s beginnings and a reflection of its continued evolution.

From a humble shop in Taiwan to dining tables around the world, Din Tai Fung remains guided by the same founding spirit to refine every detail, pursue perfection and serve every guest with sincerity, craft and warmth.

For families, this balance between familiarity and evolution reflects why Din Tai Fung continues to be positioned as a family dining choice. The familiar flavours families know are preserved, while new dishes and a new dining space at ION Orchard introduce something new for today’s diners.

The ION Orchard opening brings together elements of the brand’s heritage with a new setting in the heart of Orchard, while introducing two exclusive dishes alongside its established favourites.

As Din Tai Fung continues to bring people together over meaningful dining moments, its latest restaurant reflects how the brand is continuing to evolve while staying connected to the traditions, craftsmanship and founding spirit that have shaped its story.
