Embracing DIY, We Are InDIYpendent Campaign and Giveaway!

Our Parenting World is proud to support Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) initiative of “We Are InDIYpendent” campaign. What this means is we should incorporate “Do It Yourself” practices in our lives and to be more independent.

Last year, Our Parenting World team member Vincent did a “Do It Yourself” (DIY) demonstration to the media, and VIPs including Deputy Prime Minister, Tharman Shanmugaratnam at the Cold Storage outlet at Bukit Timah. Please click HERE to read more about the event.

In June this year, MTI launched the We Are InDIYpendent #DIYChampions Competition. 15 DIY Champions were selected, and together with DIY Ambassador, Michelle Chong, they aim to advocate self-service initiatives across the island.

We have been big fans of DIY for many years and we have been using many self-service kiosks without realising it ourselves because it has been an integral part of our lives. For example, for some of us, we may remember many years ago when we borrowed library books from the National Libraries, there would be a team of librarians who will stamp the books with the due dates before we could bring out the library books. Today, the process of borrowing and returning books is done electronically. You can borrow books at the self-service kiosks and returning via a book drop off slots. No more waiting and long queues at the libraries. 

Similarly, almost everyone today withdraw money from the ATM machines. Imagine how inconvenient it would be if you have to go to the nearest bank branch which may not be near your home and or going to the bank during office hours only to queue up and withdraw money. The invention of ATM machines has certainly helped us saved a lot of time traveling and waiting in the queue to withdraw money. We can now withdraw money anytime of the day at all corners of the island. Payment of credit card bills, telephone bills etc. can be done easily at the AXS machines instead of at the manned counters of these offices.

At the MRT stations, topping up our fare card is very easy with the self-service machines. Some of us will remember when MRT first started operations in Singapore, topping up the fare card required us to queue at the manned counters. The queue was usually very long then. Nowadays, the manned counters queue are much shorter or no queue as there are more self-service counters today and many would prefer to use the self-service counters.

Supermarkets like Cold Storage and NTUC have also introduced self-service checkout counters at many of their outlets to ease the cashier queues. Payment could be done using credit cards, NETS and some checkout counters even accept cash transactions. 

The move towards self-service counters for many of our daily transactions have definitely saved us a lot of precious time in waiting as self-service counters tend to have shorter queue as they do not need to depend on humans to operate the counters. Some self-service counters transactions are even simpler than the manned counter. Moving towards “DIY” can improve productivity as less manpower is needed to manage the checkout counter. It helps to shorten the queue and customers do not have to wait too long to checkout. For example, returning a library book via the drop off slots is easier than waiting in the queue to give to the librarian to stamp the book one by one when the books are being returned.

The “We are InDIYpendent” campaign is certainly a welcome move for all of us to improve our productivity and save our precious time. We hope to achieve InDIYpendent in our daily lives as much as possible.
