Wild Rice has once again graced the stage with its annual holiday tradition, presenting Alfian Sa’at’s “Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs” that is great for entertaining the whole family and suitable for all ages. This reimagined musical comedy is directed by the talented Hossan Leong. Showcasing a vibrant new cast, the dazzling performances led by Chua Enlai as the Queen, Nadya Zaheer as Snow White, and Siti Khalijah Zainal as the Magic Mirror, are nothing short of a delightful masterpiece that promises to captivate audiences of all ages.
This hilariously funny and heartwarming production was first introduced to the world in 2008, is Alfian Sa’at’s first time creating a Wild Rice pantomime, The challenge was to create a show that would cater to the entertainment needs of both children and adults alike. Speaking about the production, Alfian expresses his excitement, particularly highlighting the incorporation of new layers into the familiar and timeless story of Snow White.
The storyline, set in the Eternal Kingdom, introduces us to a Queen obsessed with perfection. Her subjects, upon reaching the age of 18, are subjected to an “Enhancement” program to correct their flaws. One day, the Queen’s Magic Mirror, who cannot lie without literally cracking up, reveals to her that a new beauty has come of age – her own step-daughter, Snow White. Seething with jealousy, the Queen orders the girl to undergo a nip-tuck by the creepy Royal Surgeon. To save her own skin, Snow White decides to escape to the Outer Limits, a place filled with misfits and outcasts, including the rapping, breakdancing Seven Dwarfs.
The satirical script by Alfian Sa’at, coupled with catchy original music by Elaine Chan, creates an atmosphere of joy and laughter throughout the show. The characters, especially the Seven Dwarfs, resonate with the audience as they navigate a world that demands conformity to unattainable standards. The story cleverly mixes humour with touching moments, leaving the audience both entertained and reflective.
