Our team was invited to Simply Hamper workshop where we will learn how to make our very own gift hamper at Metta Cafe and at the same time, Alexis Tan, Managing Director of Simply Hamper announced its partnership with Metta Cafe for the 2nd year running to align its corporate social responsibility goal of touching hearts one hamper at a time. Simply Hamper will include a selection of thoughtful and handcrafted gifts from the cafe. He added that “The spirit of gifting should be extended to those in our community and not just the consumer” on the partnership with Metta Cafe. He hoped the partnership would inspire people from all walks of life to work together to help build a better world.
The event was held at Metta Cafe which is an initiation by Metta Welfare Association to provide F&B vocation training for Metta School graduates aged 18 and above with mild intellectual disability and/or autism. The cafe’s mission is to provide an avenue for these youths to acquire vocation, work and life skills to prepare them for employment in their adult years, thereby helping them achieve financial independence and survival confidence in their personal skills.
Felicia Wee, the Deputy Executive Director of Metta Welfare Association shared with us that the public can book for private or corporate events and birthday parties at their private area. It is a huge and cosy area suitable for hosting events and there is no rental fee, all you need is to cater your food from Metta Cafe and this is to provide their students with job opportunities and a venue for them to learn and upgrade their skills. Ann Low, the talented Gift Basket Designer from Simply Hamper taught us how to decorate and pack our gift hamper.
Under Ann’s guidance, we started working on our hamper. It is important that we chose the correct gift basket or box to hold our contents. Next, we need to decide how to place our contents correctly and secure them well so that the items won’t move around during delivery. By doing so, we need to take into account the size and shape of each of the product when placing them in the basket. Ann advised us to put the bigger items at the back and stack them proportionally. Check that the items placed in the gift basket are well-balanced.
This is the fun part for many of us, we get to shrink wrap our gift basket by using a shrink wrap bag and blow it with a heat gun. We have to be careful not to overdo it as it will burn a hole.
Finally, you can use your creativity and decorate your gift hamper by adding ribbons and bows to your gift hamper. Some of the items in our gift hamper are from Metta Cafe, a large canister of freshly baked cookies by the students of Metta Cafe and a beautifully coloured hand-painted Orchid prints mug from students of Arts@Metta.
