From Makeup to Masterpiece: Lendlease’s Annual Sustainability Campaign Returns with a Spotlight on Upcycling Beauty Products

• From 10 July to 31 August, Lendlease malls’ annual You Won’t Believe It’s Trash campaign returns with a focus on expired makeup, inviting shoppers to discover how they can be creatively reimagined as materials for art

Expired makeup gets a new lease of life at the fourth edition of Lendlease’s annual sustainability campaign, You Won’t Believe It’s Trash – From Palette to Palette! 

From 10 July to 31 August, Lendlease malls will play host to a roving exhibition featuring eco-chic workshops, educational panels, and stunning art displays that feature how expired or unwanted makeup can be creatively reimagined.

Expired makeup products are often tossed before being fully used, but Lendlease malls hope to show visitors that these products can be reimagined as tools for creativity. That’s exactly what celebrity makeup artist Elain Lim did: She first started using expired makeup to create paintings during the pandemic, and having found it both meditative and meaningful, she hopes to share the practice with others. 

Beyond the workshops with Elain, shoppers can also look forward to a silent charity auction, a collection drive, and a showcase of green efforts by participating beauty retailers like Blé de Fonty, Clarins, FANCL, Kiehl’s, The Body Shop, and YSL Beauty. Additionally, a thrift store pop-up by Cloop adds another exciting dimension to the campaign, offering visitors the chance to shop sustainably.

Create Your Own Masterpieces Using Expired Makeup at Eco-Chic Workshops

Unleash your creativity and discover the art of sustainable painting at several exclusive weekend workshops conducted by Elain! Lendlease Plus Members can learn how to transform expired or unwanted makeup into unique art mediums, choosing between two exciting options: the Acrylic Painting Workshop, where participants will use expired makeup to create a bold and textured artwork to take home, or the Watercolour Palette Workshop, where attendees will craft their own customised watercolour palettes for future painting sessions of their own. Along the way, Elain will share her top tips on self-expression through canvas art. 

These workshops are available at Jem, Parkway Parade, and Paya Lebar Quarter. Happening every Saturday and Sunday, Lendlease Plus Members can choose from either of two 40-minute workshops by spending a minimum of $50 in a single receipt at participating malls to redeem a slot at a workshop, which can be booked via Lendlease Plus mobile app. All participants will receive a $5 Lendlease E-Voucher after completing the workshop.

Need some inspiration before your workshop? Have a look at the creative art exhibition, which features a series of paintings from Elain (crafted using expired or unwanted makeup as paint, of course) to get your creative juices flowing. Originally drawn to abstract botany due to the fast-drying nature of her unique medium, Elain’s work has since evolved into expressive, surreal narratives inspired by her subconscious. Don’t miss her standout piece ‘Passage of Time’, a deeply personal tribute to her maternal grandmother and mother, reflecting on the dreams and limitations faced by women of past generations.

An educational zone also introduces tips on how to incorporate sustainable habits into your everyday beauty routines, designed to inspire more mindful consumption. Learn how small changes in your beauty routine can make a big difference, from choosing eco-conscious packaging to repurposing everyday items.

Support Young Artists through the Silent Charity Auction

With the support of Lendlease Global Commercial REIT (LREIT), Lendlease malls will also hold a silent auction to benefit families in need in the Jurong West district. 

Heartfelt Creations, Up for Bids (Silent Auction) will feature four original artworks made by young talents from ComLink+ families. These aspiring artists were mentored personally by Elain on how to use expired makeup products to express themselves creatively through art. The auctioned artworks will raise funds for the Gift-A-Family (GAF) initiative which supports the needs and aspirations of ComLink+ families residing in Jurong West.

Lendlease Plus Members can bid on their favourite artwork simply by spending in Lendlease malls from 10 July – 31 August: Every $50 spent in a single receipt will entitle them to a single token, which allows them to place a bid on their preferred piece via the Lendlease Plus mobile app. The more tokens they put in, the higher their chances of winning the bid for the artwork. Once the bidding concludes on 3 September, the members with the highest bid for each artwork will take the respective piece home. LREIT will then match the top bidder’s token value (up to $1,000 per art piece) as a donation to GAF. 

With LREIT’s support, the campaign hopes to empower young creative talents while uplifting families in need.

Explore conscious fashion with Cloop’s Open Wardrobe, a community-driven thrift pop-up offering a carefully curated selection of pre-loved fashion with a portion of proceeds supporting a charitable cause. 

Catch the pop-up at Parkway Parade from 24 July – 20 August, before moving to Paya Lebar Quarter from 21 – 31 August. Shoppers are invited to browse and shop unique fashion finds at just $10 per piece –– contributing to the movement to close the fashion loop.

By dropping off unwanted makeup and textiles at the collection machine housed within the exhibition, which will make its way across participating Lendlease malls from 10 July to 31 August, you’ll be making a positive impact on the environment while earning Lendlease Plus$ in return. Unwanted makeup products collected will be used by Elain Lim for upcoming artwork and workshops whereas unwanted textiles will be sent to Cloop in support of circular fashion.
