Les Misérables The Arena Spectacular is now showing at Sands Theatre, Marina Bay Sands, offering Singapore audiences the chance to experience this beloved classic reimagined on an unprecedented scale with extraordinary experiences.
Running from 24 March to 10 May 2026, this strictly limited engagement marks the final Asian stop of the production’s sold-out world tour. Developed by Cameron Mackintosh to celebrate the musical’s 40th anniversary, this arena version expands on earlier concert stagings into a fully realised large-scale production. With a cast and orchestra exceeding 65 performers, the show is designed to fill a vast performance space while maintaining the emotional core that has defined Les Misérables for decades.

A Larger-Than-Life Production
From the very first note, it is clear this is far from a typical stage show. The production features a grand set by Matt Kinley, beautiful lighting by Paule Constable and Warren Letton, and impressive projections by Finn Ross, creating a visually immersive experience that fills the entire theatre.
The large scale works well for the show. The barricade scenes feel more powerful, the crowd scenes feel more exciting, and the emotional moments connect strongly with the audience. The orchestra, led by Adrian Kirk, plays Claude-Michel Schönberg’s well-known music clearly and powerfully, supporting the story without overpowering it.
A Stellar International Cast

Leading the production is Gerónimo Rauch as Jean Valjean, delivering a performance that is both powerful and deeply felt. His voice carries strength and control, while his acting brings out the character’s inner conflict and gradual transformation. He convincingly portrays Valjean’s journey from hardship to redemption, adding depth to each stage of the character’s life. This builds to a heartfelt and moving rendition of “Bring Him Home,” performed with sincerity and emotional restraint that leaves a lasting impression.

Opposite him, Jeremy Secomb delivers a strong and focused performance as Inspector Javert. He brings a clear sense of authority to the role, portraying the inspector’s unwavering belief in law and order. His performance is intense yet controlled, capturing Javert’s inner struggle as his rigid ideals begin to falter. Through both his vocals and commanding stage presence, he presents a character that is disciplined, resolute, and ultimately conflicted.

A standout moment for many in the audience is the performance by Singaporean artist Nathania Ong as Éponine. Ong brings a genuine warmth and emotional honesty to the role, making Éponine’s story feel immediate and deeply human. In “On My Own,” she strikes a remarkable balance between strength and fragility, her voice carries the familiarity of the song while adding personal nuance that draws the listener in. The subtle shifts in her tone and expression allow the character’s longing and heartbreak to emerge naturally, creating a version of the song that feels both powerful and intimately felt. For local theatre‑goers, seeing a homegrown performer deliver such a moving and nuanced interpretation adds an extra layer of connection to the production.

Adding further star power to the production is the internationally acclaimed Lea Salonga as Madame Thénardier. With a career spanning decades on stages worldwide, Salonga infuses the role with mischievous charm and infectious energy. Her impeccable comedic timing brings the Thénardiers’ scheming antics to life, while her expressive singing elevates even smaller musical moments. Salonga balances humour with theatrical flair, ensuring Madame Thénardier is both hilarious and fully dimensional, delighting audiences with a fresh and dynamic interpretation.
The Thénardiers are further elevated by Red Concepción, whose comedic timing and stage presence inject energy into every scene. Meanwhile, Na-Young Jeon delivers a poignant Fantine, particularly in “I Dreamed a Dream,” which remains one of the show’s most emotionally resonant moments.
The younger lovers are portrayed with charm by Will Callan as Marius and Lulu-Mae Pears as Cosette, while Harry Chandler stands out as a charismatic Enjolras, leading the student revolutionaries with conviction. Veteran performer Earl Carpenter adds warmth and authority as the Bishop of Digne.
Emotion, Scale, and Timeless Storytelling
Based on Les Misérables by Victor Hugo, the musical’s enduring themes of justice, love, sacrifice, and redemption remain as powerful as ever.
What sets this arena version apart is how it amplifies those themes without losing intimacy. Even within a grand setting, quieter moments of Fantine’s despair, Éponine’s unrequited love, and Valjean’s internal conflict are given space to breathe and resonate deeply.
Les Misérables The Arena Spectacular succeeds in translating one of theatre’s most enduring works into a format suited for large venues while preserving its emotional integrity. For Singapore audiences, it represents both a global theatrical event and a rare opportunity to experience the musical in a form that is simultaneously expansive and intimate.
With its limited run and internationally recognized cast, this production stands as one of the most significant musical theatre presentations of Singapore’s current season, making it a show well worth catching before it concludes.
