Andrew Lloyd Webber’s celebrated musical, CATS The Musical returns to Singapore with its unforgettable songs, distinctive feline characters and spectacular stage design.
Some musicals stay with us because of their songs, while others capture our imagination through their characters and visual spectacle. CATS the musical brings all these elements together in a production that has entertained audiences around the world for decades.
Now playing at Sands Theatre, Marina Bay Sands, until 22 November 2026, the internationally acclaimed musical returns to Singapore following its previous seasons in 2015 and 2019.
With its distinctive feline characters, memorable score and spectacular set design, CATS The Musical offers audiences an opportunity to experience one of musical theatre’s most recognisable productions.
Enter the World of the Jellicle Cats
Based on T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, CATS takes place on a special night when the Jellicle Cats gather for their annual Jellicle Ball. Each cat has a different personality and story to share with their leader, Old Deuteronomy, as they await the announcement of which one will be chosen to ascend to the Heaviside Layer and begin a new life.
Rather than following a conventional storyline centred on a single protagonist, the musical unfolds through a series of character introductions, songs and dance performances. Each Jellicle Cat has an individual identity, giving the production a varied cast of characters to discover.

There is the charismatic Rum Tum Tugger, the railway-loving Skimbleshanks and the mysterious Mr Mistoffelees, among many others. Their different personalities and performances give the Jellicle Ball its energy and variety.
Beneath the playful feline characters and lively performances, the musical also explores themes of belonging, acceptance and the possibility of a fresh beginning. The gathering is not simply a celebration of the cats’ individuality but also a moment when one of them will be given the chance to start a new life.
The Music Behind the Magic
Music is at the heart of CATS, with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s score featuring a variety of musical styles that reflect the personalities of the Jellicle Cats.

The best-known number is undoubtedly Memory, performed by Grizabella. Once a glamorous cat, Grizabella is now an outsider among the Jellicles. Her story brings a more reflective and emotional dimension to the production.
Memory has become one of musical theatre’s most celebrated songs and has been recorded by more than 150 artists. Its enduring popularity has helped introduce CATS to generations of listeners, including those who may not have seen the stage musical.
However, there is much more to the score than its most famous song. The different musical numbers give individual cats their own moments in the spotlight, moving between playful performances, lively ensemble numbers and more poignant passages.
This variety is part of what makes the musical distinctive. The energetic personalities of the Jellicle Cats contrast with the more emotional elements of Grizabella’s story, creating a production that combines entertainment with moments of reflection.
For those familiar with Memory, experiencing the song within the musical gives greater context to Grizabella’s place in the story and the significance of her journey.
Spectacular Sets, Costumes and Choreography

One of the defining features of CATS is its imaginative theatrical setting. The stage becomes an oversized junkyard, creating a distinctive environment for the Jellicle Cats to gather, perform and share their stories.
The set design and costumes help establish this unusual world, while the choreography brings the feline characters to life through expressive movements and dance. Each character has a recognisable identity, making the ensemble an important part of the production’s visual appeal.
Dance is central to the storytelling, with the performers using movement to express the cats’ different personalities. Combined with the music and costumes, the choreography gives the production much of its energy and theatrical character.

Rather than relying primarily on dialogue, CATS allows its characters to express themselves through songs, movement and visual presentation. This creates a different experience from musicals built around a more conventional narrative, with each performance contributing to the wider world of the Jellicle Cats.
The result is a production in which music, dance and stage design work together to create a distinctive theatrical experience.

A Musical With a Remarkable Legacy
Since its premiere in London in 1981, CATS has become one of the longest-running musicals in West End and Broadway history.
The original London production ran for 21 years and nearly 9,000 performances, winning the Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best Musical. Its Broadway production received seven Tony Awards in 1983, including Best Musical.
CATS has been seen by more than 77 million people, performed in more than 54 countries and translated into 23 languages. Its Broadway cast recording also won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.
These achievements reflect the musical’s lasting international appeal. Based on T. S. Eliot’s poems, it takes an unconventional approach to storytelling, bringing together a collection of characters through music, dance and theatrical design rather than a single, continuous narrative.
More than four decades after its London debut, CATS remains closely associated with its memorable score, distinctive costumes and the much-loved song Memory.
An Enjoyable Musical With Spectacular Performances
We thoroughly enjoyed watching CATS the musical. The cast delivered engaging performances, with their singing bringing the Jellicle Cats and their individual personalities to life on stage. Each character added something different to the production, making the world of CATS interesting to watch as the musical unfolded.

Mr Mistoffelees was one of the memorable characters in the production, adding to the musical’s sense of theatrical magic. His character brings a distinctive element to the world of the Jellicle Cats, contributing to the colourful cast that makes CATS such an entertaining show.
The singing was one of the highlights for us. With such a recognisable musical score, there was plenty to enjoy, and the performers brought energy and character to the songs. The music helped set the mood throughout the show, while the variety of characters and musical numbers kept the performance lively and engaging.
The decor and set design were another standout feature. The stage was spectacular, creating a distinctive world for the Jellicle Cats and giving the production a strong visual presence. The costumes also helped bring the characters to life, while the choreography added movement and energy to the scenes. The combination of these visual elements made the musical a treat to watch, complementing the singing and music throughout the performance.
What we particularly enjoyed was how well the different elements came together. The cast, music, choreography, costumes and stage design each played a part in bringing the production to life. Rather than relying on the music alone, CATS offered an engaging theatrical experience that was as enjoyable to watch as it was to listen to.
For us, CATS was a wonderful musical to watch, combining memorable songs, lively performances and spectacular stage visuals. We were glad to have the opportunity to experience this celebrated production in Singapore, and it was an enjoyable evening at the theatre.
