Maruhachi Donburi & Curry, a specialty Tonkatsu stall that offers restaurant-quality Tonkatsu at pocket-friendly prices has opened its second outlet at Havelock Road. Chef-owner August Wijaya has many years of experiences having worked at a famous curry udon restaurant located in Clarke Quay and a specialty Tonkatsu restaurant located at ION Orchard where he perfected his skills in the Japanese art of panko-ing (a technique of breadcrumbing).    

Chef August set up his first outlet at Punggol and now he is pleased to be able to serve his famed dishes in the heart of the city at his second outlet at a Kopitiam located at Blk 51 of Havelock Road. At Maruhachi Donburi & Curry, every dish is made to order. Chef uses thick and only the freshest high-quality pork and cuts, with a specific thickness used for the port loins. The pork is sourced from trusted producers and breaded with fresh Japanese breadcrumb resulting in a Katsu that is crispy, light, and fluffy outside but soft and tender inside. What’s more, only 100% cottonseed oil is used, it has zero trans-fat and gives a lighter and refreshing taste without the greasy feeling.

We visited the second outlet and there are three main sections in the menu consisting of Teishoku sets served with Japanese rice and miso soup, Curry Rice, and Donburi bowls. 

Special Pork Katsu Don 

Pork Katsu Set

Diners can look forward to enjoy hearty Katsu dishes where Chef August uses the Donburi sauce or original sauce from Japan-sourced ingredients formulated by Chef himself for an authentic Katsu experience.

We tried the Special Pork Katsu Don ($12.80) consisting of pork katsu that is braised in the Original sauce with an onsen egg added on top of a bowl of fluffy Japanese rice. The signature Pork Katsu Set ($11.80) served with fresh shredded cabbage, Japanese rice and miso soup. Both Katsu dishes come with perfectly fried pork with a lovely crunchy outer layer, the meat inside remains moist and so juicy. 

 Black Pig Pork Katsu Curry

If you like curry, you have to try the Black Pig Pork Katsu Curry ($13.80). The delicious curry dish is made using curry that is made from scratch by Chef August with his unique formulation. The curry is rich and full of flavour. So yummy!
