ArtScience Museum will be launching a new online programme called ArtScience at Home this April.
ArtScience at Home enables the museum to take its stories to the Internet for visitors to experience programmes from the comfort of their homes. The new initiative will see ArtScience Museum present online versions of its education activities such as guided exhibition tours and workshops, along with its flagship public programmes including ArtScience Late, Conversations and ArtScience on Screen.
“We see the launch of ArtScience at Home as an exciting new chapter in ArtScience Museum’s evolution, and an expression of a new, resilient and sustainable way of working during a period where Covid‐19 is affecting museums in Singapore and around the world. The programmes we are preparing respond to the context of Covid‐19 through online talks that explore how we adapt to uncertain futures, online workshops that provide families with creative learning activities to do at home, and online events that support the work of local artists at a time when that is crucial. We are a museum that has always imagined what the future may be like. This new programme enables us to imagine new futures together with our existing audiences in Singapore, and new audiences around the world,” said Honor Harger, Executive Director of ArtScience Museum.
The programme launches with the museum’s first online conference, Feeling the Future. Taking place over several weeks from 28 April, Feeling the Future will examine the human capacity to imagine new futures in a world where uncertainty and anxiety are prevalent. The talks will ask thought leaders, from Singapore and around the world, to speak about topical issues – ranging from emotional courage and mental health, to social resilience and ethics. Kicking off the online conference is a talk by Ariel Muller from sustainability non‐profit, Forum for the Future, who will discuss what the Covid‐19 situation may tell us about how we should be preparing for climate change impact that is yet to come. Future talks will be by Scott Smith (Founder and Managing Partner of futures agency, Changeist), Cheryl Chung (Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore), Tong Yee (Co‐Founder and Director of The Thought Collective) and more. Talks will be scheduled to enable local and global audiences to tune in, and hear timely presentations about issues relevant to the unprecedented times we are living in.
ArtScience Museum’s performance programme, ArtScience Late, will also be going online. From May onwards, ArtScience Museum will facilitate intimate, living room performances from musicians and performing artists on the third Thursday of each month. These performances enable the museum to continue to support local and regional performing artists during a time which is proving especially challenging for the performing arts around the world.
ArtScience at Home will also include weekly curated playlists of music and sound art, called ArtScience Late Jams. The playlists will feature DJ sets, original locally‐produced tracks, and underground albums by performers and musicians who have previously been part of ArtScience Late.
ArtScience at Home also includes a strong focus on education. The museum’s education team will be conducting virtual exhibition tours of 2219: Futures Imagined and FUTURE WORLD: Where Art Meets Science. These regular virtual tours enable online visitors to learn about the artworks, scientific stories, and ideas explored in ArtScience Museum’s exhibitions.
The team will also be delivering a series of online workshops aimed at families who are at home due to the Circuit Breaker in Singapore, and the various lockdowns around the world. For parents who are looking for hands‐on activity ideas, these easy‐to‐follow online workshops will utilise materials that can be found easily at home. The short step‐by‐step video tutorials enable families to engage in fun, educational, hands‐on activities together.
